Advocacy In Justice Settings

Description: Developed and trained by Deb Rhoades, LCSW, CASAC, CARC, PSP and Benjamin Deeb, CRPA, CARC, CJSR, PSP, this 6-Hour training will provide the key components for advocating for your participants in both the court and correctional settings. We will define and explore advocacy and types of advocacy; explore the peer role as advocates in these settings; apply lived experience to strategically advocate for both the individual and for systems change. Participants will create and practice their advocacy story as a justice peer advocate and obtain information on key language and acronyms found across these settings. Finally, participants will learn how to cultivate allies for enhancing the corrections/court system towards a more recovery-oriented system of care.
This training is approved by the InUnity-NYCB for 6 CJSR Renewal CE; 6 CARC Electives and 6 CRPA/CARC CEs. CASAC CEs Pending.

Learning Objectives:
- Define advocacy and explore the different types of advocacy that can be utilized by peer professionals in Justice settings.
- Explore the role of Peer Professionals and their impact as advocates in Justice Settings.
- Apply personal/lived experience to identify barriers faced by people at different stages in the justice system and apply lived experience strategically to advocate both for the individual and for system change.
- Review and apply who, what, when and the how of advocacy in justice settings.
- Review and apply strategies for enhancing self-efficacy and expectations of the system for justice impacted individuals.
- Create and practice your advocacy story in your role as a Justice peer advocate.
- Review and understand the language and acronyms for Justice Settings.
- Understand the importance of cultivating allies to enhance the corrections/court system toward a more recovery-oriented system of care.
- Apply knowledge and practice advocating for an Incarcerated participant/Drug Treatment Court participant.
- Utilize gained knowledge of current NYS Justice Reforms.
